Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded not in nuclear DNA but inside the mitochondrial genome — a mitochondrial-derived peptide that has reshaped how researchers think about mitochondrial-to-nuclear signaling in metabolism.
Mechanism of Action
Under metabolic stress, MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus and activates AMPK — the cell's central energy sensor — driving glucose uptake and fatty-acid oxidation pathways in published metabolic models. It is frequently described in the literature as an exercise-mimetic signal.
Dosing-Study Summary
Rodent diet-induced obesity models
0.5–5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal
Improved insulin sensitivity and prevented diet-induced weight gain via AMPK activation (PubMed #25743559)
Human skeletal muscle studies
Endogenous expression measured
MOTS-c expression induced by exercise; circulating levels correlate with metabolic fitness markers
Doses shown are reported in cited preclinical / clinical literature for research reference only — not usage recommendations.
Storage & Handling
Store lyophilized at -20°C protected from light. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water; refrigerate at 2–8°C. Use reconstituted solution promptly — mitochondrial peptides show faster solution-phase degradation in published stability work.
